Peponi Hotel Petley's Inn
LAMU
HOTEL DESCRIPTION
REVIEW COMMENT
The hotel, respendent in its traditional Arab architecture is overlooking the romantic Lamu Port and Manda Beach. The hotel has 20 double rooms and 3 suites with hand-finished Lamu furniture. All rooms are self-contained and air-conditioned. The superb cuisine is dominated by freshly caught fish and sea food dishes. The boat also takes the guests to the hotel's private Manda Island beach for snorkelling, swimming, and sunbathing. Excursions to the surrounding areas including Pate Island can be arranged at the reception.

Shela village is a tangle of narrow, sandy lanes, tall stone houses, some smaller thatched dwellings, mosques, ruins and a spacious square ringed with a few market stalls, small shops and a telephone booth. Here in the cool of the evenings the elders gather to talk, while women come out to shop. Wandering through the village you might meet discreet women in bui-bui, young boys in gowns hurrying to the mosque, sleepy donkeys, weathered fishermen, the occasional beachboy or absorbed visitor and a collection of cats. The beach starts a five minute walk from the village and it is a reason why people return to Lamu again and again - seven miles of golden sands that are never crowded, with a clean sea ideal for swimming, bodysurfing, diving, wind surfing, skiing, fishing or boating.

This beautiful and historical hotel was first opened in 1946 by Percy Petley who fell in love with Lamu whilst recovering from a fatal safari accident (an Elephant stomped on him). This old, well-known hostelry is on the waterfront near the museum. It is steeped in Lamu tradition. The hotel has 11 rooms and a swimming pool on the first floor.
