Scorpio started as a small self-catering complex in 1980. More land, rooms and pools were added up to 1988 when the bar and restaurant were opened. The cottage kitchens were retained and the concept of breakfast served on the verandas of the villas has proved one of the major selling points, especially for Scorpio's numerous repeat guests.
The villas were conceived and built by the present owners, Romolo and Elsa, together with Elsa's mother, Marjory, who was involved for some 20 years with the Lawfords and Blue Marlin Hotels. Romolo came to Kenya with the San Marco Project in 1964, bringing his technical skills to the construction and ongoing maintenance of the Hotel. Elsa arrived in Kenya with her parents in 1951, growing up in Nairobi before transferring to Malindi in 1972 as Company Secretary of Air Kenya where firsthand knowledge of top class safari organisation has been invaluable. Elsa and Romolo's daily involvement with their clients at Scorpio Villas gives this hotel a unique personal touch. |
